Hiya Always nice to meet a fellow Korngoldian. Things have been a bit quiet on this site for a while now because, probably, the flood of new recordings etc, have somewhat dried up. Most things have now been recorded and only those few stubborn pieces refuse to be recorded or need to have better reco...

Violin concerto in Scotland

Hiya For anyone in the Scotland area on the 2nd April 2011 Nicola Benedetti will be playing the Korngold Violin Concerto with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow. The conductor is Walter Weller. The bill also includes the Sinfonietta by Zemlinsky and Beethoven's ...

Yes, the full Sea Hawk live would be brilliant, but I won't hold my breath for it. The suite from it, alas, is only a 5 minute piece, which I have heard in concert 3 times (opening titles, love theme, closing titles). It is certainly a fine introductory piece for a nautically themed concert, althoug...

Sea Hawk Suite in Scotland

OK, so the Sea Hawk suite is only 5 minutes long or thereabouts, but just to inform anyone who maybe in Scotland around the new year that this is to be played in a concert. The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland are performing a sea themed concert including the Sea Hawk suite and works by Sibelius...

Of course I do not get hung up on such polls as regards their ability to tell us anything about the quality of music and I know such polls always tend towards a populist list with an overwhelming emphasis on the more recent pieces. However, I have a general unease about the very poor performance of ...

Classic FM Greatest Soundtrack poll

I have just read the Classic FM poll of the 150 greatest movie soundtracks and it has depressed me, although not in the slightest surprised me. In the top 150 'definitive' poll E.W. Korngold gets only one mention with The Adventures of Robin Hood at No. 64. Max Steiner, Franz Waxman, Alfred Newman a...

Prince and the Pauper DVD

I wonder if you have noticed that there is now a (rather basic) DVD of the Errol Flynn Prince and the Pauper in stores in the UK. It is sadly not one of the digtally restored versions with lots of extras. It is a rather cheap copy with no extras, but as cheap copies go the quality is not the worst. ...

Hi Robert As I work permanent night shift I am notoriously impossible to get hold of by phone as I'm either at work, trying (mostly unsuccessfully) to sleep by day, taking advantage of my freetime (in my semi permanent state of jetlag) by simply being elsewhere, or blasting Korngold and others while...

Dear Robert I would certainly be happy to meet up at some point in the name of Korngold. Edinburgh is a great city and I visit frequently. Sadly, I would love to tell you about a whole network of Korngoldians here who I know. Sadly I have never met another enthusiast and I while away a few minutes h...

Hi Robert My name is Peter Timoney and I am a Korngoldian living in Glasgow. As you are probably aware it is almost a Live desert here regarding Korngold. I have heard the violin concerto, the 5 minute suite to the Sea Hawk and about 90 seconds worth of Robin Hood under Carl Davis. Doesn't add up to...

I just got it posted yesterday and I think it an excellent recording, certainly among the best by the Morgan/Stromberg team. It really is great to hear a Korngold film score recording where the speed of the music is respected. Well done folks. And yes, I am well pleased with my Prince and the Pauper...

Yes, looking forward to it. However, I was surprised to go into my CD store today and find another recording of the Korngold Violin Concerto, played by Nikolaj Znaider with the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Valery Gergiev. It is coupled with the Brahms concerto. I never knew that was coming. Obv...

Thanks for the information about the recording. A previous comment lamented a lack of interest in the recording. I don't think so at all. I think every right minded Korngoldian is looking very much forward to this recording. I think we have had a period with very little new developments regarding Ko...

I don't really have much helpful to say to you on this matter. A proper review of both books would take a lot of space and time (which I unfortunately do not have). I am still reading the Wagner book and I am reading it quite slowly because my knowledge of german is not much better than adequate. Al...

Hiya Yes, I agree. superb sound for Kings Row ( which I expected perhaps) but I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Sea Wolf. I've never heard it better. My only slight quibble about Kings Row is that it has a few minutes of missing material (as Brendan points out, these are lost) in...
