Re: Kings Row & Star Wars

I think there's a difference between admitting you have "been inspired by", "adapted" or "written in the style of" and just publishing something in the knowledge that 99% of listeners won't know it's plagiarism. Another good example (in addition to Star Wars/King's Row is Phantom of the Opera and Fa...

Re: 2 DVDs of "die tote Stadt" you may not know of.

The 1983 tote Stadt DVD recording is now available in a very good quality edition.

More importantly, there's a new DVD out of a marvellous performance at the Finnish National Opera. This is THE one to buy! Fantastic, one of the very best stagings I have ever seen (and I've seen about 15 or so).

Re: New productions of Die tote Stadt

The production at Covent Garden was the same one (Willy Decker) which went on at half a dozen other places (including Salzburg where it originated, San Francisco, Madrid etc etc). At the moment there seems to be quite a few DVD versions.... -Deutche Oper Berlin 1983 (not wide screen, only 4:3 ratio)...

Re: 2 DVDs of "die tote Stadt" you may not know of.

"Die stumme Serenade" has been recorded and is on the CPO label ref number 777-485-2, conducted by Klaus Simon. If your local CD shop can't get it you can order it online from www.jpc.de ...

Die tote Stadt in Switzerland 2014

Note that there will be a series of performances of Die tote Stadt at the St Gallen City Theatre in May/June 2014. It seems that advance booking is already open. Warning: Swiss hotels are outrageously expensive for what you get, so why not stay overnight in Germany - it's only 20-25 miles away.

Re: Korngold's VIOLANTA and RING DES POLYKRATES

I went to this in June. The Augsburg City Theatre is rather grand and standards were very high indeed. One thing I felt about the double bill was that seeing the two works together lets you realise how very much superior Violanta is to Polykrates. Why Violanta is not performed more frequently is a c...

Korngold at the Royal Festival Hall London

You may be interested to note that the Korngold Violin Concerto will be one of the most played works at the Royal Festival Hall in the 2012/2013 season: no less than three performances (2/11/12: Nicola Benedetti/London PO/Osmo Vanska; 14/3/13: Hilary Hahn/Cleveland Orch/Jaap van Sweden; 24/6/13: And...

Re: Die tote Stadt / Violanta

Thanks for this. I shall make a point of seeing both the Hof and Innsbruck perfs as well as the Luebeck one. I have been to Hof several times en route elsewhere. The theatre is quite hard to find and looks extremely ugly. The box office seems to be shut most of the time too! However, it's what goes ...

Re: Die tote Stadt / Violanta

I was confusing the Nancy one with the Gelsenkirchen. Yes, the separate boxes bit was a bit odd, but the theatre was lovely and the performance very good. The Gelsenkirchen was the nude one.

I see CPO has just issued a CD set of Die Stumme Serenade - I have never heard any of this. Is it any good?

Re: Die tote Stadt / Violanta

Dear Klaus I double-checked my own tote Stadt score and it's actually 17 (16 different). Yes, I would put the Bremen one down there at the bottom too (the one with the zombie-women rising from the tomb). I missed the performance in Antwerp (however if it was the famous Goetz Friedrich one from Berli...

Re: Die tote Stadt / Violanta

Dear Klaus 48 times! 48 performances of die tote Stadt !And I thought I was a bit of an extremist, having seen it on stage a mere 15 times (14 different productions). And which were the most memorable? For me, the Bremerhaven production, done in the Stadtbad whilst the Stadttheater was being renovat...

Re: Die tote Stadt / Violanta

Dear Scott, I am sorry you don't like Glass's music. That is YOUR problem, not mine. However, mentioning his music on an EWK website is no more sacriligious than would be mentioning Haydn, whom I find an intolerable bore. But that's a matter of taste. I also must mention that, although I don't live ...

Re: Die tote Stadt / Violanta

Since Scott Curry has reviewed Violanta in Bremerhaven, I too will comment. The performance was first class, as always from this very neglected provincial German opera company. The theatre itself, after its renovation a few years ago, is indeed beautiful and I would recommend a visit to anyone - the...
