I also got last week as an introduction to the film scores the Previn recording on DG which im very much enjoying but wondered what the views are on the naxos and chandos recordings of the complete score of the The Sea Hawk? Which would be the preferred recording?

Sea Hawk recording

William Stromberg's superb recording on Naxos is the definitive, complete recording. The Chandos issue with the BBC Philharmonic under Rumon Gomba is only a selection of suites and while impressively recorded, suffers from some sluggish tempi and curious unidiomatic phrasing. The Previn film scores album on DG is to be avoided - atrocious music editing by someone who had clearly never seen the films or understodd the structure of the scores and lugubrious conducting from an old man who renders Korngold's exuberance dead in the water.
