New productions of Die tote Stadt

Post by brendan g carroll » Sat Jan 17, 2009 11:39 pm

As well as La Fenice in Venice (premiere January 23 2009), Die tote Stadt will receive new stagings at the Opera Bastille in Paris (October 2009) and by the Finnish National Opera, Helsinki in Autumn 2010.

The Venice production will also be seen in Palermo in April 09.

Rumours abound that a DVD will be made of the London Covent Garden staging, which will, in any case be broadcast by BBC Radio 3.

Die tote Stadt will receive a new production later this year at Oper Frankfurt, in February/March 2010 at the Musiktheater im Revier in Geslsenkirchen and in May at the Nancy Opera. Also the peripetatic Decker staging will reappear occasionally in Paris and Madrid.

But the big news is that Das Wunder der Heliane will be put on at the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern next April/May. The Company there is really excellent and deserve every bit of support. I shall be there for one.

The production at Covent Garden was the same one (Willy Decker) which went on at half a dozen other places (including Salzburg where it originated, San Francisco, Madrid etc etc).

At the moment there seems to be quite a few DVD versions....
-Deutche Oper Berlin 1983 (not wide screen, only 4:3 ratio)
-Opera du Rhin, Strasbourg - odd production
- San Carlo, Naples - rather good
- Finnish National Opera - new, just issued in October 2013, utterly brilliant with Klaus Florian Vogt singing Paul.

The Willy Decker version is OK and if it comes out on DVD I'll buy it. But by far the best is the Helsinki version. In my opinion.
